This is a binaural recording of 'Transmissions', the final project for my MA Sound Arts at UAL 2020/2021.

The work spans across three channels of surround audio, where calling tones are set to create a welcoming, tranquil, stress-free environment in which other stories – excerpts from conversations I maintained with my parents and my best friend via streaming calls while living in different countries – are hidden, waiting to be discovered by the audience.

The recordings create a dialogue with each other, one that does not necessarily come from understanding but from meaningful moments of shared emotion that have been experienced in the distance, some full of joy and gratification, others shadowed by frustration and grief.

By looking for ways of connecting with other people, I aimed at creating a portrait of some of my loved ones and performed the need of being close to them. The process of waiting – which is no other than a constant pulse between presence and absence – symbolised by a waiting tone digitally stretched from one second to eight minutes of duration and processed in time, pitch and space – becomes a new territory in which there is room for healing, a presence that lets the listener travel to another place through sound.
